79-year-old daredevil, Shirley, is taking on our Skydive to raise vital funds for The Myton Hospices

Living in Rugby, with Rugby Myton Support Hub on her doorstep, The Myton Hospices is a cause close to Shirley’s heart. When she was in her thirties, Shirley’s uncle was cared for at our Warwick Myton Hospice after he was diagnosed with cancer. More recently, her good friend, Gordon, has received our respite care following his Motor Neurone Disease diagnosis.

Shirley said:

It was a while ago now, but I remember how happy my uncle was at Myton and how well he was looked after. Gordon always talks about how much he loves Myton, saying it’s like going on holiday. After these two glowing accounts of the care they provide, I knew I had to do something for them.

Shirley has always been an adventure seeker, loving rock climbing, abseiling and helicopter rides. Now at the age of 79, Shirley is ticking off her biggest adventure yet by taking part in our Skydive in July, alongside her daughter, Cherry.

Shirley added:

I’ve always wanted to skydive – it’s a huge bucket list challenge for me. When I was younger, I used to have a reoccurring dream that I’d step out onto my bedroom windowsill and fly away, and ever since, I’ve wanted to experience that sensation! Everyone says I’m mad, and maybe I am!

People keep asking me what I’m most scared of about the skydive, but honestly, I don’t think I’m scared at all – I’m just really excited. And to be raising money for Myton at the same time makes it even more special!

Shirley has already raised over £600 towards her fundraising target.

Everyone at Myton would like to say a big thank you to Shirley for her bravery and determination, and all who have supported her so far to raise vital funds for Myton.

Did you know…? We are a charity, we are not the NHS and just 17% of our funding comes from the NHS. Every year we have to raise over £12.7 million to continue providing our vital services free of charge to our patients and their loved ones. We can’t do it without the support of amazing people like Shirley.
